Organizations:
Women’s Sports Foundation (Nassau County, NY)
www.womenssportsfoundation.org
Founded in 1974, the Women’s Sports Foundation works to advance
the lives of girls and women through sport and physical
activity. By getting girls active, the Foundation hopes girls will build
physically
and emotionally healthier lives. The Foundation also
works to fight discrimination and give women athletes a voice. A central
component
of the Foundation’s work is to honor outstanding individuals for
athletic achievement, commitment and dedication in contributing
to the growth of women’s sports. The GoGirlGo Project combines
sports participation with educational intervention to address
challenging issues such as drugs, body image, diversity,
and all the stresses of being
a young female.
The Square Peg Foundation (Half Moon Bay, CA)
www.everyonefits.org
Established in 2004, the Square Peg Foundation teaches
horsemanship to kids from different backgrounds
and with differing needs. By working with horses,
animals roughly 15 times larger than people,
students gain confidence from the new skills they
learn and improve their interpersonal skills by working
together with their peers, instructors,
and volunteers. In this way, Square Pegs helps
students improve their self image and feel more empowered.
Tall Ship Education Academy (San Francisco, CA)
www.tallshipacadmy.org
Since its inception in 1998, the Academy has used academic
programs for personal growth for youth of diverse
backgrounds, with an emphasis on girls. By placing
students in demanding classroom and shipboard
environments, the Academy challenges students to
learn rigorous skills and to return home anchored
in experiences of self-reliance and teamwork.
The Academy prepares girls to become responsible
individuals
who adapt to change and conquer challenge by being
responsible citizens that are
intellectually stimulated, communicate effectively,
and choose to live healthy and engaged lives.
NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation (Washington, D.C.)

homeless men and women with job training and employment
by teaching principles
of economic and ecological sustainability through classes
and hands-on experience in the security of their
certified organic garden. Some of
